Vieira, Henry and Wenger´s best signings at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will leave Arsenal at the end of the season, bringing his 22-year spell in charge of the club to an end.

The 68-year-old has endured some heavy criticism in recent years but could yet end his reign on a high, with his side preparing for a Europa League semi-final with Atletico Madrid next week.

Much of the Wenger Out campaign s frustration has come from some of Arsenal s transfers, with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea spending significantly to leave the Gunners in the shade.

There have been many times, though, when Wenger has got his transfer policy absolutely right. Here, we look at five of his best examples.

Sunderland 3 Everton 0: Van Aanholt and Kone secure Premier League safety

Patrick van Aanholt s opener and Lamine Kone s brace earned Sunderland a 3-0 victory over Everton as Sam Allardyce s side ensured their Premier League survival at a jubilant Stadium of Light and relegated fierce rivals Newcastle United and Norwich City.

The hosts came into Wednesday s meeting knowing three points would be enough to secure safety and send Newcastle down, along with Norwich, who were hosting Watford.

This victory leaves the Black Cats four points clear of both clubs with just one round of fixtures remaining, with Norwich s 4-2 win over Watford proving in vain for Alex Neil s men.

Buoyed by Saturday s battling 3-2 victory over Chelsea and facing a woefully out-of-form Everton side, Sunderland sealed the points with three goals in 17 minute…

Nigeria 1 Argentina 2: Late Rojo stunner saves Messi´s men

Marcos Rojo was Argentina s unlikely hero as his stunning late winner secured a 2-1 defeat of Nigeria that keeps Lionel Messi s side in the World Cup.

The Super Eagles were heading through to the last 16 at Argentina s expense with four minutes to go of the final Group D game, but Rojo s sensational low volley saved Jorge Sampaoli s men and set up a showdown with France in the next round.

Messi gave Argentina the lead in St Petersburg on Tuesday, the Barcelona superstar scoring a stunner to bring up the 100th goal of Russia 2018.

But when Javier Mascherano dragged down Leon Balogun in the box shortly after the restart, Victor Moses stepped up to roll Nigeria level and within touching distance of progressing.

Sampaoli sent on attackers Cristian Pavo…

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona: Simeone´s men primed to land on punch-drunk Barca

FAMILIAR FOE AS BARCA BATTLE IDENTITY CRISIS

Lacklustre performances, rumours of discontent concerning his star player and questions over his capacity to inspire Barcelona with Atletico Madrid on the horizon. Luis Enrique has been here before.

Until a battered and bruised Barca staggered out of Parc des Princes after last week s 4-0 Champions League humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, their head coach s toughest moment in charge came during his first season at the helm.

Barcelona s first match of 2015 was a wretched 1-0 loss at a rain-lashed Anoeta against David Moyes Real Sociedad. Lionel Messi was rested and unable to turn the tide as a second-half substitute, while afterwards the Catalan press was dominated by reports of a him or me ultimatum m…

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second-half brace inspires Al Nassr victory over Al-Okhdood

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning 40-yard lob as part of a quick-fire second-half double to help Al Nassr beat Al-Okhdood 3-0 in the Saudi Pro League.

The Portugal star chested down a loose ball and expertly lofted home from distance in the 80th minute after opposition goalkeeper Paulo Vitor raced out to clear the initial danger.

Ronaldo’s eye-catching finish was his 15th goal of the season and came just three minutes after he had doubled his side’s lead.

Akinfeev horror-show underlines same old story for Russia

Igor Akinfeev boasts one of the most unenviable Champions League records you can imagine for a goalkeeper.

The 31-year-old last kept a clean sheet in the competition on November 1 2006, when CSKA Moscow held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw.

It s not been so much a stick with which to beat him but rather one used to pinion him to the ground while taunts are hurled like rotten tomatoes, but the man himself says he s grown used to it.

It was painful at first, but now I don t care about the swipes I get from people, he said last October as he neared a 10-year wait for that Champions League shut-out. People embarrass themselves by commenting on it, not me.

That wasn t the case on Saturday. The goalkeeper s display was borderline embarrassing as Russia s Confederatio…

Pogba hopeful of Man Utd return before end of the season

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has said he will hopefully return from injury before the end of the season.

Pogba sustained a calf problem in the 4-0 defeat at Liverpool on Tuesday that is expected to keep him out for a month.

United interim manager Ralf Rangnick had said on Friday he believed Pogba would not feature again this season, adding that he  most likely won t be staying at the club beyond this campaign.

The France star is out of contract at the end of the season, and United s final game of 2021-22 is on May 22.

He won’t be available [at Arsenal] and most likely not for the rest of the games. It seems right now he will not renew his contract [so] it s most likely he won t be here any more next season, Rangnick said at a news confe…

Small Barcelona squad doesn´t concern me, says Setien

Quique Setien insists Barcelona s depleted squad has more than enough quality to compete on multiple fronts during the second half of the season.

Barca allowed four players to leave Camp Nou during the January transfer window, with Moussa Wague, Jean-Clair Todibo, Carles Perez and Carles Alena departing on loan.

The Spanish champions did announce the signings of Brazilian midfielder Matheus Fernandes and Portuguese forward Francisco Trincao on deadline day, but they will not officially arrive until the end of the season.

Barca host Levante on Sunday and Setien is unconcerned at the number of players at his disposal as they look to retain their LaLiga title and win the Champions League for the first time since 2015.
